TV audition program SBS ‘K-Pop Star’ will begin the ‘debut project for the winner.’

The upcoming March 25th live broadcasting will begin to see SM YG JYP Entertainment to lead ‘star making’ with their hands.
As the show enters 2nd half of the live broadcasting process of ‘K-Pop Star’, the top 7 contestants of Baek Ah Yeon, Park Ji Min, Lee Ha Ee, Lee Michelle, Lee Seung Hun, Park Je Hyung, Yoon Hyun Sang is preparing to get into top 6.

‘K-Pop Star’ is a show that boast as the most realistic audition that promise the winner of the audition to have their debut, SM YG JYP are now finally starting to participate in the star making as the program approaches the end.

Following this plan March 25 will start ‘live broadcasting casting audition’ to be implemented in ‘K-Pop Star.’ 2 people from top 6 will be casted for each entertainment and the contestants will prepare for the following 5th broadcasting together with 3 representatives of the entertainment companies. The judges are expected to be more careful and prudent in their casting as the result will make an impact on the judge’s pride.

SM YG JYP will each set up a special project team for the contestants they have casted to display the color and unique character of each entertainment. The process will be considered as to debut a new rookie group to be trained. As such each entertainment is expected to bring out the best image of the contestants in their dance, vocal, image, stage and concept.

‘K-Pop Star’ production crew said, “If the judges were figuring out the contestant’s talent in the first half of the live broadcast. Then now in the latter half with fewer contestants the judges will be meeting the contestant with more in-depth system.”

K-Pop sensation is heralding the music industry’s seismic shift.

Many world musicians who haven’t taken notice of K-Pop are now taking interest and contributing their talents.

Teddy Riley a well-known composer and producer is working with SM Entertainment. Riley co-produced half of Michael Jackson’s album ‘Dangerous, produced and co-wrote the album track ‘Teeth’ with Lady Gaga for her EP ‘The Fame Monster.’ Produced tracks ‘Believe’ and ‘Flow’ for the ‘Twenty’ album for the RB group Boyz II Men.

He has set up an office in Itaewon and spends half of the month in Korea. Riley worked with singer/rapper Jay Park on a track titled ‘Demon,’ which has yet to be officially released, and produced a mini-album for the Korean girl group RaNia.

He also worked on producing Korean girl group Girls’ Generation’s maxi single ‘The Boys’ for the groups’ first international release. He recently produced Korean/Chinese boy group EXO’s prologue single ‘What Is Love.’

Laurieann Gibson who directed Lady Gaga’s world tour ‘Monster Ball Tour’ and also choreographed ‘Poker Face,’ ‘Judas,’ ‘Telephone’ and more. She is also directing K-Pop’s rising star Big Bang’s world tour that will take place in 16 countries and 25 cities.

Tony Testa has gained his reputation as top choreographer by choreographing Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It Tour’ before the star passed away. He has also worked with other artists such as Kylie Minogue and Janet Jackson. He is the choreographer behind SHINee’s comeback song ‘Sherlock.’

There has been many times when K-Pop knocked on the door of America that is considered to be the mainstream for entertainment. The result Wonder Girls were selected as the opening actor for Jonas Brothers during the North America leg of their Jonas Brothers World Tour, 2NE1 is working on an album with Will.I.Am, SNSD even signed a contract with Interscope Records. However also on the other hand, it is that global musicians have come to be involved in the flow of K-Pop.

This trend is the result of K-Pop’s music level improving as it’s represented by idol music and many have fallen into its appeal. The fact that many people fall in love with K-Pop is proof of its attractiveness. This is a meaning that the level of music has improved as such and ripple effect of each song that is continuously spreading out becomes a hit that catches the attention of world musicians.

At the same time the changes within Korea has contributed to this change as well. After a certain time as it became natural for K-Pop artists to hold overseas activities and as there is a limit and disadvantage to penetrate the world market with Korean traditional music it has become natural phenomenon to commission the songs to overseas composers. Also as Korean audience feels less repulsive about music from overseas there are more exchanges with musicians the work with international musicians are becoming more well-established.

As K-Pop spreads out to the world entering the American mainstream market it is once again prepared to turn over a new leaf.

Idols are evolving.

Idol group BTOB held their debut launch showcase on March 21. BTOB that is referred as post BEAST in the same agency Cube Entertainment has caught the attention through each member showing off individuality and powerful performance.

The group pulled off an excellent performance as they have prepared it was difficult to find any fear or nervousness. However most of all what caught the most attention was their greeting in English, Japanese, Chinese and it was broadcasted worldwide through YouTube.

The worldwide live broadcast firs took place through 2AM when they made their comeback. K-Pop is well known to have taken advantage of YouTube the most, as even setting up a formula to gather a fan base and then making a debut in the local market. This brought in the result of allowing group such as in the past like H.O.T. to take 7 years to debut in China while only took 1 year for Girls’ Generation in Japan. But now it seems it’s difficult to even wait for a year so now the do live broadcast through YouTube.

EXO debut is even more special this year. President Lee Soo Man mentioned about EXO in an interview in 2011 about forming two different teams with the same concept and sings the same songs in Korean and other in Chinese. In addition, last August for 4 days held an event of gathering 50 worldwide composer to write a song that will connect the world.

If you see any other singers that debut now they have specific members that are selected to speak English, Chinese, and Japanese from the beginning of their debut. It seems now learning another language is basic also to work with foreign musicians and SM has shown this type of formation that is more advanced.

Year 2011 seems to be the year where K-Pop became more widely known worldwide. There were numerous world tours that were held and started to see results beyond Asia in Europe and South America. It seems K-Pop will not be satisfied with current position. There are many promising new artists emerging in the beginning of this year however it’s interesting to see how the crossroad to the world will become firmer and whether it can reach out to the US in the upcoming year.

How many girl groups are currently active in K-Pop?

Groups that are active worldwide are only a handful like Girls’ Generation, 2NE1, and Wonder Girls. Also there are those who have a large fan base in Japan and Asia such as KARA, T-ARA, Rainbow, 4minute. Then there are other groups might be recognized in Korea however it means than K-Pop has numerous groups whose names remain unknown.

SM Entertainment president Kim Young Min once mentioned in an interview that it’s difficult to even have 2 successful teams out of 10 groups. There is a large amount of capital that is needed to just even launch one group, then how much more is needed to raise one successful group according to this calculation? Still the fact remains that there are one idol group coming out newly each week.

The term girl group refers to a group of young female singers. In Britain there is the Spice Girls consisting of five member group that appeared in 1990’s and Atomic Kitten in 2000′s. This term was used in K-Pop from the latter half of 2000. In the beginning it was only referring to the young group consisting of female members however now it expanded to a wider meaning of “bright, energetic group of girls” or “female dance group.”

Last week at Seoul Gymnastic Stadium, I saw my favorite K-pop band, Big Bang! Yes, I was the only old white guy in my section, but none of the Korean teenage girls hurt me. Plus, now all my English language students think I’m cool. I did notice two strange things, though: First, before the concert, while we were waiting for the band to take the stage, they played all their videos — the very same songs we were about to hear. Weird. Second, nobody clapped — because everyone was all rhythmically waving their torchy things for two hours. Still, I had a great time!
