‘K-Pop Star’ winner Park Ji Min dislikes standing next to Baek Ah Yeon?

K-Pop Star‘ winner Park-Ji-Min confessed that she did not like standing next to Baek Ah Yeon on stage during the audition program.

Park Ji Min, who had made an appearance on the May 8th episode of SBSStrong Heart‘ along with Lee Ha Yi and Baek Ah Yeon, revealed her role model to be none other than singer-actress Noh Sa Yeon, who also appeared on this week’s episode. ”I really, really like her. She’s very strong-willed and the way she’s always full of confidence makes me want to become more like her.”

As Noh Sa Yeon often jokes about her not so slim and feminine appearance on shows, the emcees questioned Park Ji Min if she had ever felt stressed about her appearance next to Baek Ah Yeon. The guests broke out in laughter as Park Ji Min replied with a deep sigh that seemed to express the emotions she had kept pent up inside. She explained, “Ah Yeon unnie has a beautiful figure- she’s tall and has a small face, but she’s always standing next to me! I really dislike that!

Comedian Jung Ju Ri then remarked, “I heard this while I was in the waiting room today. After Park Ji Min saw Baek Ah Yeon in a tube top dress, she expressed her envy saying, ‘I would have worn a tube top dress too if I was skinny.’ This happened while she and Lee Ha Yi were eating cheese kimbap,” giving viewers another round of laughter.

Six groups of rising musicians from Taiwan are tuning up for major music festivals in the U.K. and Germany, according to the ROC Government Information Office May 9.

The fifth Liverpool Sound City Music Festival, running May 17 to 19, features singer-songwriters Peggy Hsu and Waa Wei, along with pop-rock band Monkey Pilot. They will appear at a Taiwan showcase night May 17 and play 30-minute gigs at separate venues two days later.

From June 20-24, alternative rock bands Go Chic, The Girl and the Robots, and The White Eyes will bring their punk and electronic tunes to the c/o pop International Music Festival in Cologne.

At both events, music critics from Taiwan will join with local music industry professionals to discuss the latest trends in Mandarin pop and European music markets, the GIO said.

“Taiwan has long been the prime market for Mandopop and a cradle for successful singers from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore,” said music commentator Ma Shih-fang, who is co-hosting the Liverpool forum.

“Over the past decade, Taiwan has seen more young talent than ever before trying out diverse music genres such as reggae, punk, post-rock and electronica,” said Chang Tieh-chih, a music and political critic who will co-present a forum in Cologne. “The local music scene has never been so vibrant.”

On the sidelines of the concerts in Germany, the Taiwan delegation will attend a Creativity and Business Convention where they are expected to meet with representatives from 25 international music festivals and explore partnership possibilities, sources said.

The Liverpool festival lineup boasts close to 400 bands from around the world in 30 venues, as well as speakers from 23 countries. Established in 2008, the annual event also celebrates independent music with a series of activities involving film, fashion and photography.

The ninth edition of the Cologne festival, showcasing more than 50 shows by performers from 15 countries, will be held at 20 venues across the city, organizers said. (THN)

Jay Chou tops Forbes’ China celebrity 100 list

Mandopop’s golden boy Jay Chou beat Hong Kong megastar Andy Lau to top Forbes‘ China Celebrity 100 list this year, reported The Daily Chilli.

The 33-year-old Taiwanese superstar had a stellar year, achieving success in different areas of his career.

He released his 11th album Exclamation Mark and starred in Dante Lam’s critically and commercially acclaimed action flick, The Viral Factor.

In addition, he bagged more than 10 sponsorship deals and did countless commercial live performances, including concerts, over the past year.

Following him closely in second and third spots are Lau and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. This marks 30-year-old Fan’s first entrance in the top three list.

Lau had held more than ten concerts in the course of two months. His investment in A Simple Life – a movie that went on to become a multiple-award-winning box office hit, also brought him great returns.

Other celebrities who have earned places in the top ten are Faye Wong, Li Na, Zhao Benshan, Jolin Tsai, Yao Ming, Jackie Chan and Lin Chi-ling.

The celebrities in the annual list by Forbes magazine were selected based on their income and exposure in the media.

Social media outlet Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, also helped raise the profile of Chinese celebrities like Yao Chen, Yang Mi and Xie Na.

It has been a great year for Yang, who rose from 92nd (last year) to 14th in the list.

K-pop star Kim Hyun Joong reaches out to 3000 fans

SINGAPORE – For once, after a K-pop gig, almost everyone stayed glued to their seats.

There was excitement in the air as each fan waited for his or her moment at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The moment to get up close and personal with their idol.

Korean star Kim Hyun Joong then shook the hands of or high-fived everyone in the 3,000-strong crowd on Friday night.

And he did that right after having performed for two hours, singing hits such as Kiss Kiss and I Am Your Man, and playing games with his fans.

No surprise then, that in the one hour and 15 minutes that it took for him to complete his unenviable feat, he was seen supporting himself with his other hand on the table.

At times, he was seen massaging his chest with his free hand, his face showing signs of weariness.

Nevertheless, he continued to smile and greet every fan.

A fan was overheard remarking, almost out of pity for Kim, that not once did he wipe his hand even when it was a given that he must have touched plenty of “disgusting, clammy palms”.

It may have been his first-ever fan meeting and mini concert in Singapore, but how Kim reached out to every single person at the Singapore Indoor Stadium will be remembered for a long time to come.

Will Smith is a fan of the Wonder Girls

On May 7th, actor Will Smith attended the perss conference for his movie, ‘Men in Black 3‘, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Seoul and made the reporters burst out into laughter over his comment on the Wonder Girls.

When asked who he thought was most like an alien, he replied, “I talked about this with my daughter and she thinks the Wonder Girls are like aliens.”

Will Smith remarked, “My wife and daughter are very interested in international music. They told me about Wonder Girls, and I am a fan. I’m very simple when it comes to my taste in music, and so I don’t know too much about K-Pop.

Wonder Girls members Hyerim Sunye walked the red carpet and joined Will Smith on the stage at Youngdeungpo Times Square.

When asked why he was holding his world premiere in Korea, the actor replied, “I remember holding a successful promotional event for one of my movies 10 years ago in Korea. While working on this film in the States, there were a lot of talks about promoting in the world market. As Korea is one of the emerging film markets of the world, I felt that Korea would be most fit for our world premiere.”

He added, “This is actually my second time in Korea, as I previously visited the country during the World Cup in 2002. I’m here this time with my wife and daughter, and they’re both out enjoying Seoul right now. I’ve slept since arriving last night so I haven’t been able to enjoy Seoul yet, but I hope to meet a lot of people and feel it for myself.”

BoA already misses ‘K-Pop Star’

On May 7th, BoA took to her Twitter to express the emptiness she feels now that the first season of SBS‘s ‘ K-Pop Star‘ has come to an end.

She wrote, “My first week without ‘K-Pop Star’. I think I spent it safely without it. Almost went to Songdo but I woke up and got myself together! I guess I’ll start to get used to it all. Everyone else as well.”

Considering that she was a judge for the past six months on the show, it’s no wonder she misses the show and Songdo, which is the convention center in which the live broadcast is filmed.

Netizens commented, “I hope season two starts soon”, “My Sundays without ‘K-Pop Star’ are empty as well”, and “BoA unni, when’s your comeback?”

So who’s ready for a second season?

First Markham Place is Markham’s "other" Chinese mall

First Markham PlaceWhen people think about Asian/Chinese malls in the GTA, chances are the first place that comes to mind is Pacific Mall. This instant connection unfortunately overshadows the fact that there is another relatively large mall to the north (and west) called First Markham Place. Built in the late 1990′s, located in the main area of Markham, and boasting over 150 non-chain retail stores with 20-plus restaurants, this shopping centre is a favourite among locals who want to get their Asian fix but don’t want to travel to the much further (and much more chaotic-parking wise) Pacific Mall.

An interesting aspect about the mall is its overall physical layout and location. First, it’s located adjacent to a big box mall known as the Woodside Centre, which houses a Home Depot, Kelsey’s, Chapters, and other Western merchants. With only a small local road separating the two shopping centre’s parking lots, this results in a literal East meets West scenario.

Second, the mall is comprised of two types of retail form: an indoor mall and a strip plaza. Most of the merchants that sell goods and services, along with the food court, are located in the indoor section, whereas most of the major restaurants are dotted along the strip plaza. Not only do we have a juxtaposition of cultures, but also one in terms of shopping centre typology.

Here are some interesting places to check out (or eat in) at First Markham Place.

First Markham Place food courtThe food court (indoor mall)
One of the undisputed highlights of First Markham Place is the food court. It’s a spacious and sprawling space of 20+ stalls eagerly wanting to fill your stomach with an extremely diverse array of Asian goodies. Thai food? Check. Korean? They got two of those. Malay? Got it. Chinese? Don’t even get me started. Combined with the opportunity to watch Chinese seniors performing tai chi in the morning, it’s practically dinner and a show. Some highlights are the delicious yet cheap shu mai dumplings at Yan’s Cook or the juicy pork chops at Wah Lam Food Expert.

Oriental Recipes (indoor mall)
No trip to Singapore is complete without trying out their famous bakkwa, which are ultra-moist and tender beef jerkies. This little stall located at the very end of First Markham Place now brings you a taste of that amazing Singaporean specialty to the GTA without the high cost of an airplane ticket.

Spellbound (indoor mall)
If you ever wanted to get your hair to look like those quirky J-Pop or Cantopop artists with their anime-gravity-defying looks and multicoloured dyes, then try this salon out. It has been open for as long as the mall has, and 15+ years in a retail complex with high turnover speaks volumes for the place’s popularity and quality. With reasonable prices and funky interior, this is a place where the young, or at least the young at heart, can let their hair down (quite literally) and get creative.

Shun Lee Herbs (indoor mall)
No trip to a major Chinese mall would be complete without a stop at a Chinese herbal store, and this unit is arguably one of the most impressive ones in First Markham. Featuring a very large open store with bright lights, you can easily get lost in your thoughts as you examine the various herbs made up of animal and plant parts that you’ve never heard of, for help on everything from the more mundane-sounding hair loss to the more exotic -sounding “clearing of qi from toxins”.

Fruit JungleFruit Jungle (indoor mall)
Despite the fact that the York Region landscape is full of many excellent bubble tea stalls, this modest-looking establishment sets itself apart by offering real fruit juices in their drinks, as opposed to the powdered flavour variety found in most other places. Bonus points are given to the well-meaning but overly-excited and comical sign on the front of the store (“pearls not rocky or delicate soil, but chewy and yummei!” in reference to the texture of their tapioca balls) and the fact that they can’t seem to make up their mind if the store’s name is Fruit Jungle (as seen on their store signage) or Food Jungle (as seen on their wall decorations).

Ding Tai FungDing Tai Fung (strip plaza)
Offering soup-filled dumplings (xiao long bao) and other Shanghainese specialties, the dim sum dishes here are not of your typical Cantonese variety. It’s priced relatively higher than most other dim sum places in the GTA, but the portion size and the quality of the ingredients make it worthwhile. There’s even a glass window through which you can see the chefs hand-making your delicate dumplings. Try the crab xiao long bao, which has been praised by many to be the best in Canada (no, seriously).

Peaktop RestaurantPeaktop Restaurant (strip plaza)
Another long-standing mainstay of First Markham Place, this Cantonese restaurant opened its doors in 1997 and has had several renovations to keep the interior fresh and current, even expanding its reach by opening a second location in Vaughan. Offering Cantonese staples like BBQ meats and roast sucking pig, this place is a staple for Chinese food lovers who want something a little more upscale. The newest addition to their menu is their collection of delicious hot pot rice dishes.

Szechuan Garden (strip plaza)
Part of the spicy Ban Mu Yuan family of restaurants, this location offers your taste buds a tasty and spicy experience. They specialize in hot Szechuan favourites such as the spicy fish (sui zhu yu) and the spicy beef (fu qi fei pian). While it doesn’t offer the regular dim sum dishes that many of the other locations have, this location does offer two specials: a large variety of handmade dumplings and a collection of hot pot dishes, both with their own special menus, so make sure you ask for them.

VIP Vietnamese CuisineVIP Vietnamese Cuisine (strip plaza)
If you’re not a purist and therefore don’t mind a Vietnamese restaurant completely operated by Chinese people, then you should visit this place. The beef slices in each of their pho dishes are by far some of the freshest in the GTA. In addition, their lemongrass chicken/porkchops have bold flavours and are better than similar varieties offered at other establishments.

Nak Won (strip plaza)
Quickly becoming a favourite among Korean food fans, this restaurant chain is well-known for its large variety of Korean and Korean- Chinese dishes. This particular location feels a lot brighter and more spacious than the others, while the food quality is as solid as you would expect from this chain. Try the dolsot bibimbap, which is a rice, egg and meat dish served in a hot stone bowl complete with spicy sauce. It tastes as lovely as it sounds and comes to your table sizzling hot.

Girls’ Generation Splinter Group Enters Billboard 200

A common move with popular K-Pop groups on hiatus is to split themselves into other projects. In particular, the sub-unit concept has proven popular with members able to experiment to bring something fresh for fans. Girls’ Generation created the sub-unit Girls’ Generation – TTS (also known as Taetiseo) who this week became the highest charting K-Pop act on the Billboard 200 with their EP “Twinkle” — at No. 126 on this week’s Billboard 200 with 3,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It was only March 17 this year that BIGBANG spent one week on the chart at No. 150.

The act also makes big moves on the Heatseekers Albums chart, debuting at No. 2, only to be bested by Human Nature who performed on “Dancing With The Stars” last week. The EP does top the World Albums chart with less than two days of its worldwide release sales counted for Billboard charts.

The act was tipped to be a hot one with over 10 million collective views of the three teaser videos featuring a different member in each. To possibly encourage orders, if fans bought the entire EP package, they would receive special tracks of the members introducing the EP songs. Additionally, if fans e-mailed an address associated with SMTown, the group’s label, with a picture to prove they bought the album, they were in the running to receive a special gift from Girls’ Generation – TTS.

The sub-unit is made up of three members: one of the group’s most powerful vocalists Taeyeon, the charismatic and English-speaking Tiffany, and the group’s youngest member Seohyun. They are also known as Taetiseo; a combination of their three names.

While Girls’ Generation is known for their sexy concepts and choreography (from the slick first English single “The Boys” to playing dress up on “Mr. Taxi”), the sub-unit sees a completely revamped girls with a focus on funky vocals and vibrant outfits.

In other K-Pop news, two boy bands make appearances on the World Albums chart with B.A.P. making their comeback this week with an EP titled “Power” as well as U-KISS debuting at No. 10 and No. 12 respectively.
