My Odessa

My Odessa is a three-piece all-girl band from Davao, Philippines, literally made the trip to Manila, packed in their car with all their instruments and their amps to try their hand at a recording career. It’s an expedition that holds no promises, perhaps to be replete with personal sacrifices and hardships. But it was something that needed to be done, an odyssey stirred by their very own passion for music.

Giving up college to travel to Manila, the girls of My Odessa got together as a band in the most common scenario there is Sid had been playing in a band in high school and met Ana during one of the competitions they had joined. Paige eventually joined her sister and her new band mate to form My Odessa. But in an uncommon twist, this was an all-girl band with the guts to make things happen.

Winning accolades from their rocking performances in various town competitions, not to mention for their surprising and impressive covers of classic rock songs tike Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” or the instrumental “Moby Dick” and even Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, they heard nothing but praises and encouragement to go and seek a recording career. Winning a Mindanao-wide competition in Tagum in Davao where about 60 bands competed My Odessa was introduced to Manila-based producer Nonoy Tan by the city administrator.

With the help of both Paige and Sid’s family, and permission from Ana’s own parents who relented to their daughter’s dream, they took a long and uncomfortable road trip to Manila to seek out their own fortune.

Today, Viva Records releases the band’s self-titled debut and they are now co-managed by Viva Artists Agency, Inc. and Tan himself. Viva has released the band’s first single, “Baroque,” which is already making waves on FM radio. An upbeat rocker inspired by the sisters’ dog, Charlie, who seems to have ill-feelings towards their third member, Ana, the song’s undercurrent is that of someone pining for a guy who would not give her the time of day. The album also includes the original song they wrote for that competition in Tagum, called “Together We’ll Fly”, a song of friendship, and every bit a reflection of where they are now in their chosen path.

They won the 22nd AWIT Award People’s Choice For Best Music Video.
