K-pop band BEAST to give first European concert

KOREA – K-pop boy band BEAST will have its first concert in Europe next month, its agency said on Friday.

The concert, titled “2012 Beast 1st World Tour — Beautiful Show,” will take place in Columbia Halle, one of most prestigious concert halls in Berlin, Agency Cube entertainment said. The concert hall has hosted major concerts performed by international stars such as Boys?Men and Sting, it added.

Beast members said they were looking forward to introducing K-pop music to an audience more used to different kinds of music.

“We recently ranked third in a German music chart so we’re especially excited to repay our German fans for their support,” band leader Yoon Du-jun was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.

BEAST gave a joint performance in London last year with singers from their agency such as G.NA and 4minute.

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 – January Week 4

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - January Week 4

With Korea celebrating Lunar New Year holidays this past week, movement on the music chart have slowed down a bit. Our top two songs remained the same as last week, with T-Ara’s “Lovey Dovey” repeating as No. 1 for the second consecutive week, and Dynamic Duo’s “Without You” holding on to the second spot. Both songs have a slight increase in points. “Lovey Dovey” has another impressive showing with 985 points, just 15 shy of a perfect score. The only source to prevent “Lovey Dovey” from being perfect was in Airplay, where this song was third behind MBLAQ’s “This Is War” and Teen Top’s “Crazy”. The latter rises a spot to No. 3 and becomes Teen Top’s first ever top three hit. “Lovey Dovey” is still way in front of other songs in scores and barring a major collapse, it is expected to three-peat as No. 1 next week.

Only two new songs in the top 10 this week and they are both sung by rising groups. As mentioned, MBLAQ’s “This Is War” topped the Air Monitor chart and overall it moves up nine spots to No. 4 this week. The rising boy band just got the silver award on the male group category in our 2011 Soompi Gayo Award. “This Is War” is coming from MBLAQ’s recently released fourth mini-album. The boys are showing a stronger image and it has a good chance “This Is War” will become their first ever chart topping hit.

The other new song is at No. 9.  Mixed group Sunny Hill is back with a maxi single “The Grasshoppers”. The title track is “The Grasshopper Song” which is based off one of Aesop’s Fables, “The Ant and the Grasshopper”. As the story suggests, this exciting dance number is about wanting to live like the carefree grasshopper without minding what other people think. It was composed by hit maker, Lee Min Soo and penned by Kim Ina, who also wrote IU’s “You And I” and Sunny Hill’s own “Midnight Circus” last year. This week “The Grasshopper Song” moves up 14 spots to No. 9.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:

Cool – 애상 (Sorrow)
Genre: Pop/Dance
External from soompi image
Album: Cool Vol. 4 (1998) Track 2
Watch: MV
Comment: Veteran songwriter Yoon Il Sang is celebrating his 20th anniversary of being in the Korean music industry.  He is inviting many of the current K-pop singers to remake his famous compositions in his upcoming album. Many singles will be pre-released before the actual album comes out.  The first hit song is already in our top 10 for two weeks – 10cm’s “Sorrow”.  For the next few “Yesterday Once More” segments, we are going to feature the original versions of these Yoon Il Sang written songs. “Sorrow” was originally sung by mixed trio Cool in 1998. It was the title song of their 4th album.

Newer generations of K-pop listeners may not be too familiar with Cool but they were very popular for a long time.  Cool’s music is always fun and colorful with a summer theme. The trio of Lee Jae Hoon, Kim Sung Soo, and Yuri debuted in 1994 and they released a new album each summer. Because of their fun and cheerful style, Cool was accepted by fans of all ages and they always recorded very high album sales. Their comebacks were always very brief and they did not promote a song for too long. Still, that did not prevent them from topping the music charts on almost all their album title songs. After releasing their 10th album in 2005, Cool broke up and members went solo. They re-united again in 2008 and the following year Cool released their 11th album.  Cool’s version of “Sorrow” has their trademark fun summer style, which is totally different from the acoustic folk version you hear from 10cm recently.  Compare these two versions by clicking on their respective MV links to see which one you like more.

K-Pop Idols Add Star Power to Korean International Style Show in Japan

K-Pop Idols Add Star Power to Korean International Style Show in Japan

K-Pop’s frontrunners grace the three-day, Hallyu-fueled Korean International Style Show (KISS) in Tokyo, Japan. SNSD, Kara, BEAST, CN Blue, Sistar, T-ara, 4Minute, FT Island, After School, Secret, Rainbow and Infinite add star power to the event that intends to showcase South Korea’s thriving fashion industry.

KISS features Korean brands and models alongside some of their Japanese counterparts during the festivities at Tokyo’s Yoyogi National Gymnasium, near the trendy district of Harajuku. While KISS is fashion-focused, idol groups are an integral part of the program as Hallyu and the attention on fashion stems from K-Pop’s influence.

SNSD, CN Blue, BEAST and Sistar added more star power to KISS’ inaugural night on January 25. RaNia was the opening act for the first night that turned the spotlight on high-end fashion brands from both countries.

SNSD came in for an encore appearance on January 26. T-ara, FT Island and 4Minute will join the girls for the second night, which features trendy fashion. Japanese department store chain Lumine supports the second night with a showcase. Nine Muses is expected to perform as the opening act.

Finally, Kara, After School, Secret, Rainbow and Infinite will join the festivities of the closing night. Korea’s street fashion takes center stage on January 27.

K-Pop’s presence in KISS is reportedly the biggest crowd-drawer. According to local news agencies, 33,000 tickets have been sold, riding on the popularity of the idol groups who have gained footholds and fans in the Japanese music scene.

Which K-Pop Star and K-Drama Are Japan’s Favorite?

Which K-Pop Star and K-Drama Are Japan's Favorite?

What is Japan’s favorite Korean Drama? That would be “Winter Sonata.

And who is Japan’s favorite Korean artists? The answer would be Kara.

Younghoon David Kim, the chairman of the Korean Cultural Industry Exchange Foundation, has been researching the effects of the Hallyu Wave in Japan. His latest analysis of the Hallyu Wave in Japan has been made public through the fourth series entitled, “Forever Wave: An Original.

According to the book, 2,000 men and women aged fifteen and older, living in Tokyo and Osaka, were targeted for a Hallyu craze survey. “Winter Sonata” is still the number one favorite show with the Japanese, according to those who participated in the poll. They were also asked “Who is the most talented Korean actor?” Coming in first place was Bae Yong Joon, followed by Choi Ji Woo in second place, two of the main leads for “Winter Sonata.”

As for favorite artists, Kara proved to be the most admired performers in Japan. The ladies came in first 34.8% of the votes. They held on to a lead of 17.8% over their next competitor.

The book also looked at the rate of import and export status in Japan, while focusing on the Korean Wave’s effects on international trade with Japan. It is clear that it has had an effect as the numbers have gone up there as well.
